Once a responder has submitted a project, their answers are locked and cannot be edited. If a responder realizes they need to correct or update a response after submission, they can restart the project so it goes back into edit mode. Depending on whether you have already opened that submission, this either happens automatically or requires your approval.
When Your Approval Is Needed
Whether a restart needs your sign off depends on one thing: whether you have opened the submitted project yet.
- If you have not opened the submitted project, the responder can restart it on their own. No approval request is sent to you, since you have not reviewed the submission yet.
- If you have already opened the submitted project, the responder can no longer restart it directly. They must send a restart request instead, and the project only reopens once you approve it.
The rest of this article covers the second scenario, where your approval is required.
How You Are Notified
When a responder submits a restart request, DiligenceVault sends you an email titled Request to Restart Due Diligence. The email names the firm and the entity the request applies to, and includes a View History button.
The project also appears in your Projects grid with the status Pending Restart, so you can find it even without the email.

Approving from the Projects Grid
If you would rather locate the project yourself, you can approve the restart from the Projects grid instead of using the email link.

What Happens After You Approve
Approving a restart request immediately reopens the project for the responder. Keep the following in mind once you approve:
- The responder can update any and all responses in the questionnaire, not only the one that prompted the request.
- You will not be able to view any of the responder's answers until they submit the project again. The previously submitted responses are hidden from view while the project is back with the responder.
- The project status changes to reflect that it is back in progress with the responder.
Tips and Things to Know
- Check the entity and firm named in the email or on the project page before approving, so you are confident you are reopening the right project.
- Because your view of the responses is hidden until resubmission, approve a restart only when you are ready for the questionnaire to be out of your hands for a while.
- The Pending Restart status makes these projects easy to find later, even if you do not act on the email right away.
- If you want to keep control over every restart, review a submitted project promptly. Once you have opened it, a responder can no longer restart it without your approval.
Example Use Case
A responder submits their annual due diligence questionnaire, then notices a figure in one of their responses was entered incorrectly. They send a request to restart the project so they can fix it. The requestor receives the Request to Restart Due Diligence email, clicks View History, and lands on the project Summary tab. After confirming this is the correct entity, the requestor clicks Approve Restart. The project reopens for the responder, who corrects the figure and resubmits. The requestor can then view the updated responses again.
